If you read my post in January’s Natural Living Blog Carnival, then you know that one of my family’s green resolutions this year was to finish ridding our bath and beauty routine of all those nasty chemicals that are so prevalent on the store shelves.  Over the course of the last year, we’ve already switched to all-natural deodorant, baby wash, soaps and body wash, and are currently devising the perfect method of “no-poo” (more on this to come soon!).  The one thing we hadn’t yet switched over to all-natural was our toothpaste.

I have never really had any teeth problems.  My husband, on the other hand, has super sensitive gums, and even the “sensitive formulas” on the market are still full of harsh chemicals.  Charlie is dealing with some baby tooth decay, which we are in the process of attempting to halt/reverse naturally.  So, I’m honestly a bit surprised it took me so long to make this switch!  I am super stoked with the first batch, so I’m excited to share this with you.  It’s so quick and easy, I even let my toddler help make it.  Plus, there hasn’t been a fight for brushing his teeth since we switched!  He loves the taste and it’s special since he helped make it.  So, without further ado… here’s my recipe for homemade all-natural toothpaste!

*A quick note before the recipe – bentonite clay is an amazing natural substance that works to not only clean, but pull harsh metals from your mouth/teeth.  In order to ensure you don’t mess up these natural properties when making this toothpaste, it is important that you do not let the clay come into contact with metal.  Use glass or plastic tools to mix and store.*

Ingredients:
- ¼ cup bentonite clay
- 2-3 T. baking soda
- 2 T. melted coconut oil
- ¼ t. celtic sea salt
- peppermint essential oil
- tea tree essential oil
- about ¼ cup warm water, give or take
- stevia, to taste

Directions:
In a non-metal bowl, add clay, baking soda, and sea salt.  Slowly mix in warm water and stir (with a non-metal spoon) until dissolved.  Add about 12-15 drops of peppermint essential oil and about 5-6 drops of tea tree essential oil, and stir.  You’ll want this to be toothpaste consistency at this point, so add a little bit more water and/or clay to get the right consistency.  Begin slowly adding stevia, liquid or powder.  Taste test to get the right flavor for you.  Store in a glass jar.  To use, simply dip your toothbrush into the jar to get the right amount, wet, and brush!

You can play around with this formula for your needs.  If you’re not a fan of minty toothpaste, try orange essential oil.  I plan on making a more “robust” re-mineralizing formula next time around.  I’ll be sure to share that recipe with you as well.
